Bulgarian[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Probably of Oghur origin from Proto-Turkic *sīĺ (wedge, tooth) + (-e) (diminutive suffix). Compare Serbo-Croatian шѝљег (male lamb) (dialectal). Akin to the Turkish borrowing Bulgarian шиш (šiš, skewer) (Turkish şiş), Chuvash шăл (šăl, tooth).
