Bashkir[edit]

Etymology[edit]

From Common Kypchak *suyuq (liquid, watery, diluted), from *suvu- or *sugu- (to become diluted or watery). Possibly related to Proto-Turkic *sub (water).

Compare to Karakhanid [script needed] (suvuq, watery); Tatar сыек (sıyek, watery, diluted), Kazakh сұйық (sūiyq, watery, diluted), Kyrgyz суюк (suyuk, watery, diluted), Uzbek suyuq (watery, diluted), Uyghur سۇيۇق (suyuq, watery, diluted), Khakas суух (suux, watery, diluted), Tuvan суук (suuk, watery, diluted).

The initial š- in Bashkir is difficult to explain; all cognates exhibit s- or its regular developments.
