Etymology[edit]

From *qaydan (from where), from Proto-Turkic *ka- (interrogative particle). -dan is an ablative case formant.

Cognate with Tatar кайдан (qaydan), Kazakh қайдан (qaidan), Southern Altai кайдаҥ (kaydaŋ), Kyrgyz кайдан (kaydan), Shor қайдаң, Khakas хайданъ (xaydanʺ, from where), etc.
