From Middle Mongol [Han needed] (qurilta, assembly), from Proto-Mongolic *kurï- (to gather, to assemble). Compare Mongolian хурах (xurax, to gather, to convene), хурал (xural, assembly).

Cognate with Kazakh құрылтай (qūryltai, assembly), Crimean Tatar qurultay, Uyghur قۇرۇلتاي (qurultay), etc.
