Probably from Proto-Indo-European *(s)libʰ-reh₂, and cognate with Proto-Germanic *slipraz (smooth; slippery), Ancient Greek ὀλιβρός (olibrós, slippery), though the cognates point to a *-b-, not *-bʰ-.
