The origin is uncertain. Related to խուռն (xuṙn). Likely an Anatolian borrowing: compare Luwian [script needed] (ḫarnanti-), [script needed] (ḫarnamman), Hittite [script needed] (ḫarnanta-), [script needed] (ḫarnammar, yeast, leavening).[1][2][3][4]
