Etymology

From Iranian *han-darta-, composed of the prefix *ham- (“together”) and the past participle of *dárati (“to hold, have”), from Proto-Indo-European *dʰer-. Compare Sanskrit संधृत (saṃdhṛta, “firmly held together, closely connected”).
