Etymology[edit]

Etymologically means “front-side” and derives from Proto-Indo-European *pr̥Hwós; cognate with Sanskrit पूर्व (pūrva, being before, going in front, first, former; eastern), Avestan 𐬞𐬀𐬎𐬭𐬎𐬎𐬀 (pauruua), 𐬞𐬀𐬊𐬎𐬭𐬎𐬎𐬀 (paouruua), 𐬞𐬊𐬎𐬭𐬎𐬎𐬀 (pouruua, being in front, first, former; southern), Old Church Slavonic прьвъ (prĭvŭ, first). Compare հիւսիս (hiwsis).
