Etymology[edit]

The origin is uncertain. Usually connected with the family of Proto-Indo-Iranian *yáwas (barley; cereal, grain), either as a common inheritance from Proto-Indo-European or a borrowing from Iranian.

  1. boiled and crushed wheat, barley or spelt
