Etymology[edit]

The origin is uncertain. One suggestion connects Latin niger (black), assuming Proto-Indo-European *neg⁽ʷ⁾-r- (painted, colored, darkened), and thus possibly related to *nókʷts (night), but the existence of such a root is disputed and not evidenced further.
