Etymology

Inherited from some suffixed zero-grade formation of Proto-Indo-European *h₂ewlós, perhaps *h₂uliyo- or — to explain -ղ- (-ł-) instead of -լ- (-l-) — *h₂ulnyo-. Among the cognates compare especially Proto-Slavic *ùlica. The unsuffixed stem may be preserved in post-classical ուղ (uł).
