Old Armenian[edit]

Alternative forms[edit]

Etymology[edit]

The original spelling is տաւսախ (tawsax). Possibly from Akkadian 𒄑𒌆 (GIŠTAŠKARIN /taskarinnu/, box tree) via the mediation of Hurro-Urartian;[1] compare Hurrian [Term?] (/taskar-/, box tree). The Old Armenian derivate may contain the putative plant-suffix *-ախ (*-ax), possibly of Hurro-Urartian origin.[2] Note also Biblical Hebrew תְּאַשּׁוּר (təʾaššūr, box tree).
