Ultimately from Akkadian 𒁍𒌑𒄷 (pu-u-ḫu /⁠pūḫu⁠/, exchange, substitute, replacement; loan), perhaps via Hurrian 𒁍𒄭 (pu-ḫu /⁠pôḫi, pūḫi⁠/, barter, exchange).
