Yiddish[edit]

Etymology[edit]

From an extended form of Middle High German durch (through), probably either aldurch (literally all through) or hindurch (literally there through, right through). Doublet of דורך (durkh). Compare phonetically Yiddish אַזוי (azoy) from Middle High German also, and Yiddish אַוועק (avek) from Middle High German in wec, enwec. Eventually from Old High German thuruh, from Proto-Germanic *þurhw.
