Etymology[edit]
From Arabic إما لَ (ʾimmā lā), equivalent to إما (ʾimmā, “if even”) + لَ (lā, “not”) cognate with Hebrew לֹא (lo). Likely adapted to form the compound אִי ('i, “not having, not being”) + לְמַלֵּא (lemalé, “to fulfill”).
