Hebrew[edit]
Etymology[edit]
Root |
---|
י־ב־שׁ (y-b-š) |
From the root י־ב־שׁ (y-b-sh); compare יָבֵשׁ (yavésh, “dry”).
Verb[edit]
התייבש / הִתְיַבֵּשׁ • (hityabésh) third-singular masculine past (hitpa'el construction)
- (intransitive) To dry, to dry out: to become dry.
- הבגדים מתייבשים. ― hab'gadím mityabshím. ― The clothes are drying.
Usage notes[edit]
- Unlike English dry, Hebrew הִתְיַבֵּשׁ is specifically used when a person or thing is becoming dry on its own. When one person or thing is drying another, the related transitive verb ייבש / יִבֵּשׁ (yibésh) is used.
