From Middle High German wētac (ailment, literally woe day). Compare obsolete German Wehtag (sorrow), Low German Koppweihdag (headache), Cimbrian béetag (illness, sickness, disease). By surface analysis, וויי (vey) +‎ טאָג (tog).
