Etymology[edit]
Related to טֶרֶף (téref, “prey”), as the deadly injury usually occurred to a prey animal.
Noun[edit]
טְרֵפָה • (trēfáh) f (plural indefinite טְרֵיפוֹת)
- The carcass of an animal that died due to injury or illness, and therefore not kosher according to halakhic law.
- וְאַנְשֵׁי־קֹ֖דֶשׁ תִּהְי֣וּן לִ֑י וּבָשָׂ֨ר בַּשָּׂדֶ֤ה טְרֵפָה֙ לֹ֣א תֹאכֵ֔לוּ לַכֶּ֖לֶב תַּשְׁלִכ֥וּן אֹתֽוֹ׃
- Neither shall ye eat any flesh that is torn of beasts in the field; ye shall cast it to the dogs. (Exodus 22:30)
- (by extension) A food item that is not kosher.
