Hebrew[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Root
א־ח־ר (ʾ-ḥ-r)

From ל־ (l'-) +‎ אחר (akhár).

Preposition[edit]

לְאַחַר (l'akhár)

  1. After, at a later time than.

Usage notes[edit]

  • This preposition is somewhat more formal than the synonymous אחרי (akharéi-).
  • Unlike English after, לאחר cannot introduce a bare clause; rather, the subordinator ש־ (she-) must be inserted.
  • Unlike English after, לאחר cannot stand alone as an adverbial; rather, a construction such as לאחר זאת (l'akhár zot, after that) must be used.
