From Proto-Iranian *daiH- (to look, see). Related to آدینکار (ádénkár, mirror maker), Persian آیینه (âyine, mirror), Ossetian айдӕн (ajdæn, mirror), Northern Kurdish neynik, Parthian 𐫀𐫀𐫅𐫏𐫗𐫃 (ʾʾdyng /⁠āδenāg⁠/, mirror).
