Inherited from Proto-Turkic *as- (to hang); cognate with Azerbaijani asmaq, Bashkir аҫыу (aśıw), Chuvash усма (usma), Kazakh асу (asu), Kyrgyz асуу (asuu), Tatar асу (asu), Turkmen asmak, Uyghur ئاسماق (asmaq) and Uzbek osmoq.
