Etymology[edit]
آق (ak, “white”) + دكز (deñiz, deniz, “sea”).
Referring to it as the "White" sea is common throughout the region, see Arabic الْبَحْر الْأَبْيَض الْمُتَوَسِّط (al-baḥr al-ʔabyaḍ al-mutawassiṭ, “"Middle white sea”), Persian بحر سفید, though these may be calques as direct translations from the Ottoman (possibly by the Ottomans).
