Etymology[edit]

آق (ak, white) + دكز (deñiz, deniz, sea).

Referring to it as the "White" sea is common throughout the region, see Arabic الْبَحْر الْأَبْيَض الْمُتَوَسِّط (al-baḥr al-ʔabyaḍ al-mutawassiṭ, "Middle white sea), Persian بحر سفید, though these may be calques as direct translations from the Ottoman (possibly by the Ottomans).
