Unknown. Dubious relation to عَنْبَس (ʕanbas, lion), Ge'ez ዐንበሳ (ʿänbäsa, lion), عَبَّاس (ʕabbās, lion) which are explained by عَبَسَ (ʕabasa, to scowl).
