Etymology[edit]
From Classical Persian هند (hind), from Old Persian 𐏃𐎡𐎯𐎢𐏁 (hindūš), from Sanskrit सिन्धु (sindhu, “a river, stream”). It is one of the Arabic country names which require the definite article ال (al-).
