Etymology[edit]

From Classical Persian هند (hind), from Old Persian 𐏃𐎡𐎯𐎢𐏁 (hindūš), from Sanskrit सिन्धु (sindhu, a river, stream). It is one of the Arabic country names which require the definite article ال (al-).
