Inherited from Proto-Turkic *ōpur (glutton), from *ōp- (to gulp down, swallow); cognate with Bashkir убыр (ubır), Chuvash вупӑр (vup̬ăr), Kazakh обыр (obyr), Kyrgyz обур (obur) and Tatar убыр (ubır).
