Alternative forms[edit]

Etymology[edit]

From Middle Persian bʾlyk (bārīg/k, thin, fine subtle). Akin to Old Armenian բարակ (barak), an Iranian borrowing. One of a few adjectives that has preserved the final -g/k phoneme and did not undergo the regular sound change from Middle Persian to Modern Persian. Others include تاریک (târik, dark) and نزدیک (nazdik, near).

This etymology is missing or incomplete. Please add to it, or discuss it at the Etymology scriptorium.
Particularly: “Doesn't seem to be covered in etymological dictionaries. Could it be derived from Proto-Indo-European *bʰerH- (to strike, pierce)? The PIE root usually refers to piercing, but some of its descendants seem to refer to striking or cutting instead. This seems semantically feasible, as "sliced" things are often thin, and the root does seem amply attested in Iranian.[1]
