Etymology[edit]

Borrowed from Ottoman Turkish باصمه (basma, printed, something pressed). Analyzed as an instance noun (on the pattern of such words as رَسْمَة (rasma, a drawing; an artwork) and بَسْمَة (basma, a smile)), forming the denominal root ب ص م (b-ṣ-m).
