Etymology 4[edit]

From the root ح ذ ف (ḥ-ḏ-f) in the sense of "trimming (especially laterally)", from the تَحْذِيفُ الشَّعَر (taḥḏīfu š-šaʕar, undercut hairstyle); so called for the distinctive teal-colored side patches on the bird's head.
