Arabic[edit]

Etymology[edit]

From the root ق ص ع (q-ṣ-ʕ) originally denoting "a furrow, a hollow, or divot that collects water", hence "a trough or basin", "a large serving dish"; related natively to ق ص ص (q-ṣ-ṣ) meaning "tracks", "indents in ground", and ق ص ي (q-ṣ-y) meaning "to gulp down", "to drink down all of a containers contents". Alternatively, the furrow sense perhaps derives from Middle Persian (kiš, a line, groove); seemingly developed separately from *kaʔs- (cup, bowl, container) and a false cognate to Persian کاسه and its suspected Indo-European relations.
