From Middle Persian myγ (mēγ, cloud, mist), from Parthian, from Proto-Iranian *Hmaygáh (compare Manichaean Parthian myg, Avestan 𐬨𐬀𐬉𐬖𐬀- (maēγa-, cloud)), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hmaygʰás (compare Sanskrit मेघ (megha, cloud)), from Proto-Indo-European *h₃meygʰ- (cloud, mist, fog).

Related to Persian مه (meh), and cognate with Kurdish Northern Kurdish mij.
