Etymology[edit]
From وِلایَتی (vilāyatī, “foreign”) and بَین٘گَن (baiṅgan, “eggplant, aubergine”). Cognate with Bengali বিলাতী বেগুন (bilatī begun). Compare with Persian گُوْجِهفَرَنْگی (gowje-farangi, “European plum”) and Dari بادِنْجانِ رومِی (bādinjān-e rōmī, “Roman aubergine”).
