Inherited from Proto-Dravidian *puẓ-u (worm). Cognate with Tamil புழு (puḻu), Malayalam പുഴു (puḻu), Kannada ಹುಳು (huḷu), Kodava ಪುಳು (puḷu), Tulu ಪುರಿ (puri), Telugu పురుగు (purugu).
