Etymology[edit]

Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀔𑀸𑀡𑀺 (khāṇi), 𑀔𑀸𑀡𑀻 (khāṇī), from Sanskrit खानि (khāni, mine), from the root खन् (khan), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *kan-. Compare Punjabi ਖਾਣ (khāṇ), Gujarati ખાણ (khāṇ), ખાણી (khāṇī), Marathi खाण (khāṇ), and Bengali খাদ (khad). Doublet of کَھانِی (khānī).
