Etymology[edit]

Inherited from Proto-Turkic *yelken (sail) and thus related to یل (yel, wind); cognate with Azerbaijani yelkən, Bashkir елкән (yelkən), Kazakh желкен (jelken), Kumyk елкен (yelken), Tatar җилкән (cilkän), Turkmen ýelken, Uyghur يەلكەن (yelken) and Uzbek yelkan.
