From the root ܙ-ܪ-ܥ (z-r-ʿ) related to sowing, from Proto-Semitic [Term?]. Compare Akkadian 𒆰 (zērum), Arabic زَرْع (zarʕ), and Hebrew זֶרַע (zéraʿ).
