From Aramaic מְדִינְתָּא (məḏīntā), derived from the same root of דָּן (dān, to judge), denoting the place where judgement takes place; compare Turoyo ܡܕ݂ܝܬ݂ܐ (mḏiṯo) and also borrowed into Arabic مَدِينَة (madīna, city) and Hebrew מְדִינָה (m'diná, state).
