From the older form ܥܵܡܸܨ (ˁāmiṣ), from Aramaic [Term?], with the /ṣ/, shifting to /č̣/ as observed in many words. Compare Classical Syriac ܥܡܲܨ (to close the eyes or other senses, to be closed).
