Dhivehi[edit]

Etymology[edit]

From earlier 𑤀𑤘𑤾𑤘𑤳𑤩𑤳 (aḍḍuvu), 𑤀𑤖𑤾𑤝𑤳𑤩𑤳 (aṭduvu);[1] equivalent to އަށް (aṣ̊, eight) +‎ ދޫ (, island).[2]

In modern Dhivehi, this compound would be formed with the plural ދޫތައް (dūtak̊), but in Early Dhivehi, the bare noun stem can be used as a plural.[3]
