Etymology[edit]

Borrowed from Arabic عَوَامّ (ʕawāmm), the plural of عَامَّة (ʕāmma, majority) (compare आम (ām) from عَامّ (ʕāmm)). Compare Punjabi ਅਵਾਮ (avām).
