Etymology[edit]
Borrowed from Classical Persian چشمه (čašma, “spring, source; spectacles”), related to چشم (čašm, “eye”), itself ultimately from Proto-Indo-Iranian *čáćšma (“sight”). Related to Sanskrit चक्षु (cakṣu). Other borrowings from Persian are Assamese চছমা (sosoma), Bengali চশমা (cośma), Punjabi ਚਸ਼ਮਾ (caśmā), Gujarati ચશ્માં (caśmā̃), Marathi चष्मा (caṣmā).
