Etymology[edit]

Ultimately from Classical Persian تنبور (tanbūr). However, the word was assimilated in an "Indianized" manner and was reanalyzed as तान (tān) +‎ पूरा (pūrā). Compare Marathi तंबोरा (tamborā).
