Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀧𑁂𑀟 (peḍa), from Ashokan Prakrit *𑀧𑁂𑀟 (*peḍa, “lump”). Cognate with Punjabi ਪੇੜਾ (peṛā) / پیڑا (peṛā), Gujarati પેંડા (peṇḍā), Marathi पेढा (peḍhā), Odia ପେଡା (peḍa), ପେଣ୍ଡା (peṇḍa), Bengali পেঁড়া (pẽṛa).
