Hindi[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Hindi verb set
भेजना (bhejnā)
भिजाना (bhijānā)
भिजवाना (bhijvānā)

Perhaps from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀯𑀺𑀲𑀚𑁆𑀚𑀤𑀺 (visajjadi), from Sanskrit विसर्जयति (visarjayati, to send, utter).[1] Turner disagrees, and reconstructs Ashokan Prakrit *𑀪𑁂𑀚𑁆𑀚𑀢𑀺 (*bhejjati), possibly from a Sanskrit अभि-अज्यते (abhi-ajyate, to be led to), the latter component being the passive form of अज् (aj, to drive, propel). The first etymology is slightly problematic, but changes from s to h in Prakrit are not uncommon and so it is plausible. Tedesco gives the development visajj > *vihajj > undergoing metathesis *vhiajj > *vhejj.

This verb is restricted to Central and Eastern Indo-Aryan languages. Cognates include Punjabi ਭੇਜਣਾ (bhejṇā) / بهیجنا (bhejṇā), Nepali भेज्नु (bhejnu), Odia ଭେଜିବା (bhejiba), Maithili भेजब (bhejab).
