From Proto-Indo-Iranian *(s)márdati, from *(s)merd- (to bite, sting). Cognate with म्रदते (mradate, pulverize), Latin mordeō (bite, sting), Ancient Greek σμερδνός (smerdnós, dreadful), σμερδαλέος (smerdaléos), English smart.
