        [Vishwamitra] retired to the forest to practise ascetic worship of Mahādeva (Shiva). After some time, Shiva, the Lord of Gods, with the bull on his flag, appeared before Vishwamitra and said to him : "O King, why art thou undergoing penance ? What is thy desire ? I will grant thee whatsoever thou askest". Vishwamitra, making obeisance to Shri Mahādeva said to him : "O Great God, if I have found favour with thee, then instruct me in the Upanishads and other branches of learning, teach me also the mysteries and the science of archery. Whatever weapons are known to the danavas, yakshas, asuras, gandharvas and other beings, let them be revealed to me by thy grace." On hearing the request of the king, the Lord of Gods answered, "Be it so" and returned to his abode.
