Etymology[edit]

Of uncertain origin. Tedesco reconstructs *मिल्(ह्) (mil(h)) as the original form of the root, and derives it from *मिश्लति (miślati, to mix up), relating it ultimately to मिश्र (miśra, mixed). Not related to Ancient Greek ἅμιλλα (hámilla, competition, conflict).
