From रक्ष् (rakṣ), from Proto-Indo-European *h₂lek- (to defend), same source as Ancient Greek ἀλέξω (aléxō, I defend). Other cognates include Old Armenian երաշխիք (erašxikʻ), and Old English ealgian (to protect, defend).
