From Proto-Indo-Aryan *Hláwpas, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hláwpas, from Proto-Indo-European *Hrówp-o-s, from the root *Hrewp- (to break, tear (up)) +‎ *-os. Cognate with Proto-Germanic *raubaz (rape; robbery).[1][2]
