Etymology

From Proto-Indo-Iranian *wáHr̥, from Proto-Indo-European *weh₁r- ~ *h₂wer-. Compare Avestan 𐬬𐬁𐬭 (vār), Persian باران (bârân, “rain”), Latin ūrīna, ūrīnārī, Ancient Greek οὖρον (oûron), Old English ūrig (“moist”), Old Prussian wurs (“pool”), perhaps Old Armenian գայռ (gayṙ, “mud”) and Proto-Slavic *varъ.

     शेपो रोमण्वन्तौ भेदौ वारिन्मण्डूक इच्छतीन्द्रायेन्दो परि स्रव ॥

     aśvo voḷhā sukhaṃ rathaṃ hasanāmupamantriṇaḥ.
     śepo romaṇvantau bhedau vārinmaṇḍūka icchatīndrāyendo pari srava.

     The horse would draw an easy car, gay hosts attract the laugh and jest.
     The male desires his mate's approach, the frog is eager for the flood, Flow, Indu, flow for Indra's sake.
