From Proto-Indo-European *ḱéns-e-ti, from *ḱens- (“to announce, proclaim”). Cognate with Latin cēnseō, Ancient Greek κόσμος (kósmos), Avestan 𐬯𐬀𐬢𐬵 (saŋh, “to declare”), Polish sądzić.
